Uber’s global chief technology officer for mobility and delivery, Praveen Neppalli Naga, stated that the company plans to treble its personnel in India within the next three to five years as the nation emerges as a major growth hub.
During his first trip to India since assuming the new position, Naga told ET that Uber has rapidly grown in the country since setting up the hub in 2014 thanks to the high caliber of engineering talent there.
With 2,200 employees, the company’s engineering team now employs twice as many people as it did three years ago. These employees work in design, product, data science, and engineering. “While we cannot share the numbers now, we will grow at the same rate as we have and will double the workforce in the next 3-5 years,” Naga said.
He claimed that there aren’t enough workers to create goods and services for multinational technology businesses. “But with AI, everything that needs to be built can be built, and the only limit is ideas,” he stated. Since they have private data to develop pricing and matching algorithms for future delivery and personalization, the company is also considering developing its own AI model. “But we need to make sure of the privacy aspects,” he stated.
