Uber partners with Rivian with $1.25 billion investment to scale robotaxi network

In a major push toward autonomous mobility, Uber has announced plans to invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian as part of a long-term partnership to develop and deploy robotaxis.

The agreement begins with an initial investment of around $300 million, while the remaining amount will depend on Rivian meeting key milestones in autonomous vehicle development through 2031. The partnership will focus on Rivian’s upcoming R2 electric SUV, which will be modified into fully autonomous robotaxis.

In the first phase, Uber and its fleet partners plan to deploy around 10000 autonomous R2 vehicles starting in 2028. The rollout will begin in cities like San Francisco and Miami, with services available exclusively through the Uber platform.

The companies also aim to scale the program significantly. Plans include expanding the fleet to as many as 50000 vehicles by 2031, with the option to purchase an additional 40000 units. The robotaxi service is expected to gradually expand to up to 25 cities across the US, Canada, and Europe.

For Uber, this partnership supports its strategy of becoming a platform for autonomous mobility instead of developing its own self-driving technology. For Rivian, the deal offers both financial backing and a large-scale commercial opportunity as it advances in the autonomous vehicle market.

The collaboration reflects growing competition in the robotaxi segment, where companies are working to combine electric vehicles with advanced AI-driven autonomy to transform urban transportation.
