Uber Eats introduces AI powered Cart Assistant to simplify grocery shopping

Uber Eats is expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities with the launch of a new feature called Cart Assistant. Announced on Wednesday, the AI powered tool is designed to help users build their grocery carts faster and more easily. The beta version of Cart Assistant is now available within the Uber Eats app.

To access the feature, users search for a grocery store in the app and tap the purple Cart Assistant icon on the store’s page. Customers can type in a shopping list or upload an image of one and the AI assistant will automatically add the required items to their cart. This includes photos of handwritten lists as well as screenshots of recipes and ingredient lists. After the items are added, users can customize their basket by switching brands or adding more products from the same store.

Uber Eats says Cart Assistant also uses data from previous orders to prioritize familiar products, such as a customer’s regular milk or preferred oatmeal brand. This helps create a more personalized shopping experience. “Users were telling us they wanted a quicker way to shop and we know how precious your time is,” Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga said in a statement. “Cart Assistant helps you get from idea to checkout in seconds.”

The new feature strengthens Uber Eats’ position in the growing AI driven grocery and food delivery market. Competing platforms have already introduced similar tools. In 2023, Instacart launched an AI search feature powered by ChatGPT to offer personalized recommendations. That same year, DoorDash reportedly tested an AI chatbot called DashAI. Both Uber Eats and DoorDash also integrated with ChatGPT last year to streamline food ordering. In addition, a media report in 2023 revealed that Uber Eats was developing an AI chatbot that could ask about budget and food preferences to assist with orders. Beyond customer tools, Uber Eats is also investing in AI features for merchants, including AI generated menu descriptions, improved food photos and review summaries.
