A major move toward autonomous transportation is underway as Uber has announced a partnership with NVIDIA to introduce a large network of robotaxis worldwide. The company aims to deploy around 1 lakh autonomous vehicles by 2027, calling it the largest Level 4 ready mobility network planned so far.
As part of the collaboration, Uber will integrate autonomous ride and delivery fleets powered by NVIDIA’s AI computing systems. The system will be built on NVIDIA’s new DRIVE AGX Hyperion 10 platform along with NVIDIA DRIVE AV software. These technologies are designed for Level 4 autonomous vehicles that can operate without human involvement under most driving conditions.
The partnership also includes the creation of a data factory environment supported by NVIDIA’s Cosmos AI platform. This setup will collect and process vast amounts of real world driving information to help improve safety, navigation accuracy and decision making for autonomous vehicles on roads across the globe.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said, “NVIDIA is the backbone of the AI era, and is now fully harnessing that innovation to unleash L4 autonomy at enormous scale, while making it easier for NVIDIA-empowered AVs to be deployed on Uber.”
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang described the initiative as a major step toward transforming transportation. He said the company believes autonomous vehicles will lead to safer and more efficient travel. He added, “Together with Uber, we’re creating a framework for the entire industry to deploy autonomous fleets at scale, powered by NVIDIA AI infrastructure. What was once science fiction is fast becoming an everyday reality.”
As part of the rollout plan, global automobile manufacturer Stellantis NV will be among the first to supply at least 5,000 robotaxis equipped with NVIDIA’s autonomous technology. These vehicles will operate on Uber’s network in the United States and other regions once deployment begins.
Uber will also manage ongoing fleet operations including remote supervision, charging, cleaning, maintenance and customer support. The companies expect the initiative to mark a major shift in how people travel in cities in the coming years.
