Uber and Lyft partner with Baidu to test robotaxis in UK

Global competition in autonomous mobility is gathering pace as Uber Technologies and Lyft move to test driverless taxi services in the United Kingdom next year. Both companies are partnering with Chinese technology major Baidu in a bid to advance commercial robotaxi operations.

The move signals how ride hailing platforms are speeding up autonomous deployment through strategic partnerships. London is emerging as an early testing ground for large scale robotaxi services in Europe, reflecting the region’s growing openness to new mobility technologies.

Lyft also plans to roll out Baidu’s autonomous vehicles on its platform in Germany and the UK, subject to regulatory approvals. Both Uber and Lyft have stepped away from developing autonomous vehicles in house and are now relying on alliances to bring driverless services to market faster.

These partnerships highlight the growing momentum behind global robotaxi expansion. Alphabet’s Waymo announced in October that it would begin tests in London this month. At the same time, Baidu and WeRide have already launched autonomous operations in the Middle East and Switzerland.

Robotaxis are expected to offer safer, greener, and more cost efficient transportation options. However, profitability remains a key concern. Publicly listed companies such as Pony.ai and WeRide continue to operate at a loss. Analysts caution that the high cost of maintaining autonomous fleets could put pressure on margins for platforms like Uber and Lyft.

Industry experts suggest that hybrid networks could offer a more practical path forward. These models combine robotaxis with human driven vehicles, helping platforms manage peak demand periods and pricing more effectively.

Lyft has also been expanding its presence in Europe. In July, the company completed its $200 million acquisition of European taxi app FreeNow from BMW and Mercedes Benz. The deal marked Lyft’s first major move outside North America and gave the US based firm access to 9 countries across Europe.

As regulatory frameworks evolve and partnerships deepen, the next year is expected to be critical for the future of commercial robotaxi services in Europe.
