UAE Plans First Underwater Bullet Train to Connect Dubai and Mumbai

The United Arab Emirates has announced an ambitious plan to build the world’s first underwater bullet train, linking Dubai to Mumbai. This futuristic train aims to redefine long-distance travel by combining speed, luxury, and marine views through transparent tunnels under the Arabian Sea.

The project will stretch across nearly 1200 miles from the port city of Fujairah to Mumbai, with proposed travel speeds between 600 and 1000 kilometers per hour. Once complete, the journey is expected to be faster than air travel and offer passengers a unique visual experience of the underwater world.

Dr Ahmed Al Hariri, who leads the UAE’s National Advisor Bureau, said, “This is not just about transport, but an immersive experience.” Initially introduced as a concept in 2018, the project is now moving forward as a serious infrastructure development.

The train will feature panoramic windows that allow travelers to enjoy the marine ecosystem as they move between two major economies. Besides tourism and passenger travel, the train will also be used to transport goods, such as freshwater from India to the UAE and oil in the opposite direction. This initiative is being seen as a strategic move to deepen trade ties between the two regions.

This underwater train has drawn comparisons with Saudi Arabia’s NEOM city project. As both nations invest heavily in futuristic infrastructure, the Dubai to Mumbai train could give the UAE an edge if completed ahead of schedule. Sara Ahmed, a travel blogger from Dubai, said, “The underwater train isn’t just about getting from point A to B. It’s about relishing the wonders of the marine world.”

Still, building such a structure comes with engineering challenges. The tunnel must withstand deep-sea pressure, ensure safety at high speeds, and win public confidence. Rajesh Verma, a businessman from Mumbai, said, “I’ve always been wary of the ocean’s depths. As much as I love the idea, I’ll likely stick to conventional modes of transport.”

Dubai’s leaders are more focused on technical possibilities than cost. The train could cost several billion dollars, depending on design and materials. A detailed feasibility report is now being prepared to examine construction, safety, and environmental impact.
