TTD will employ AI Technologies for ensuring a smooth darshan

To improve the pilgrimage experience, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the official guardian of the well-known Venkateswara temple here, is investigating the application of facial recognition and artificial intelligence (AI), an official stated on Thursday.

In order to ensure a seamless darshan (visit to the deity), avoid fraud and impersonation, and facilitate accommodations, access control, and other operations, the temple body would use these technologies, according to TTD executive officer (EO) J Syamala Rao.

“TTD envisioned adopting the latest technological solutions available in the market including Artificial Intelligence to improve the overall pilgrimage,” said Rao in a press release.

According to the EO, pilgrims will get time-slotted darshan tokens as part of these futuristic efforts, which will use face recognition technology to record their facial features.

He said that when a pilgrim’s photo is taken, it would be filtered through data from the previous 30 days, or around 10 lakh photos, to eliminate duplicate reservations and allow for the service of more pilgrims.

Rao stated that by putting this method into practice, fraudulent activity and impersonation may be avoided while the token issuing and verification process is made quick and easy.

AI and facial recognition technologies are also being considered to track the number of pilgrims at several places, including the Tirumala shrine, queuing lines, and compartments.

This facial identification is anticipated to be driven by the installation of AI-based facial recognition cameras, according to Rao.

“This solution leverages TTD management to exactly assess the probable darshan time expected for the pilgrims who are waiting and also can assess the darshan time for pilgrims joining queue lines,” he said.

With the use of this technology, the temple’s body would be able to inform visitors of the anticipated darshan time, enabling them to make appropriate travel arrangements.

TTD, which is positioned across the temple’s darshan pathways, can determine how long it takes to finish darshan in different categories and also close operational gaps.

Additionally, cameras with AI and face recognition capabilities would be useful for tracking and identifying intruders in Tirumala at precise places.

The EO noted that facial recognition technology would eventually be expanded to include all potential TTD services.
