President Donald Trump Announced $100 Billion TSMC Investment in U.S. to Boost Semiconductor Manufacturing

President Donald Trump revealed that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is investing $100 billion in the United States, a significant move that will enhance the U.S. position in the global semiconductor market. This new investment builds on TSMC’s existing $65 billion commitment, aiming to establish five state-of-the-art fabrication plants across the country.

Trump made the announcement at a White House event with TSMC CEO, C.C. Wei, calling the investment “a tremendous move” for both the U.S. economy and national security. The new factories will help meet the growing demand for semiconductor chips, which are essential for everything from AI and automobiles to advanced manufacturing.

Currently, TSMC’s first Arizona plant has started producing 4-nanometer chips, used by tech giants like Apple, Intel, and Nvidia. The new facilities will increase production capacity and are expected to create thousands of high-paying jobs in the U.S.

TSMC’s expansion in Arizona will include three more semiconductor manufacturing plants and two packaging facilities. TSMC’s CEO, C.C. Wei, emphasized that this investment will create thousands of jobs and strengthen U.S. manufacturing.

During the event, Trump also addressed concerns about the potential impact of China isolating Taiwan. He acknowledged the investment’s importance but warned that such an event would be “catastrophic.” However, he added that the new U.S. investment would ensure the country has a strong foothold in the semiconductor industry.

Taiwan’s government welcomed the investment, with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Washington noting that Taiwanese businesses now account for over 40% of Taiwan’s foreign investments. TECRO also highlighted that this move will enhance U.S.-Taiwan economic ties and strengthen supply chain cooperation.

With TSMC’s bold investment and expansion plans, the U.S. will gain more control over its semiconductor production, reducing its reliance on foreign sources.
