Trinidad and Tobago Joins UPI as PM Modi Hails Digital Payment Growth

Trinidad and Tobago has officially become the first Caribbean country to adopt India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) through the BHIM app. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the nation for embracing this digital transaction system during his visit from July 3 to 4, hosted by Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

During the visit, both countries expressed strong interest in expanding digital cooperation. They also agreed to collaborate on implementing India Stack solutions such as DigiLocker, e-Sign, and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), further deepening digital ties between the two nations.

With this addition, Trinidad and Tobago joins seven other countries that have adopted UPI, bringing the total to eight.

Here are the countries currently using UPI:

  1. France

In 2024, France became the first European country to widely accept UPI. This began with ticket purchases at the Eiffel Tower through a partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and French payment firm Lyra.

  1. United Arab Emirates
Since 2021, UPI payments have been accepted in the UAE through a collaboration between NIPL and Network International. The system works across major outlets including Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates.
  1. Bhutan

Bhutan was the first country to adopt UPI standards for QR deployment in 2021, following a partnership between the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan and NIPL. It enabled seamless payments via BHIM UPI for tourists and local users.

  1. Nepal

In 2024, NIPL joined with Fonepay, Nepal’s largest payment network, to enable cross-border UPI transactions between India and Nepal, making payments between the countries faster and easier.

  1. Mauritius

Prime Minister Modi and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth launched UPI services in the country in 2024. Co-branded RuPay cards were also introduced and designated as domestic cards in Mauritius.

  1. Sri Lanka

During the same event, Sri Lanka also adopted UPI services. President Ranil Wickremesinghe said the move would boost connectivity and deepen bilateral ties.

  1. Singapore

NIPL partnered with Singapore-based firm HitPay in 2023 to enable UPI QR code-based payments across stores, restaurants, and attractions in Singapore.
