France based energy company TotalEnergies said on Tuesday that it has signed a 21 year power supply agreement with Alphabet owned Google. Under the deal, TotalEnergies will provide 1 terawatt hour of renewable electricity to support Google’s data centres in Malaysia.
The company said the electricity will be generated from the upcoming Citra Energies solar plant in Malaysia. Construction of the solar facility is scheduled to begin in early 2026.
According to TotalEnergies, the power supply contract is expected to come into effect in the first quarter of next year.
This agreement builds on an earlier partnership between the two companies. In a separate deal signed in November, TotalEnergies also committed to supplying renewable power to Google’s data centres located in Ohio in the United States.
The move highlights the growing energy demands of data centres, especially those operated by large technology companies. As Big Tech firms accelerate investments in artificial intelligence, their data centres are consuming significantly higher levels of electricity. In many cases, these energy requirements are exceeding the capacity of local power utilities.
The long term deal reflects Google’s continued push toward clean energy sourcing for its global operations, while also strengthening TotalEnergies’ position in the renewable power market for data driven infrastructure.
