Tamil Nadu has lost at least Rs 1,010 crore to digital fraudsters in the past seven months, according to a release from the state’s cyber crime wing. Of this amount, Rs 314 crore has been frozen and a part of it has already been returned to victims after court approval.
Data from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal showed that 1,27,041 complaints were registered in 2024, while 1,09,608 cases have already been reported up to July 2025. The release stated that fraudsters lured victims with promises of high returns on investments, swindling Rs 492.97 crore this year alone. In addition, scams known as “digital arrest” accounted for losses worth Rs 97 crore.
In 2024, victims lost Rs 1,673 crore to such crimes. Out of this, Rs 772 crore was frozen, and Rs 84 crore was refunded to affected individuals. To make the refund process quicker, the Madras High Court directed magistrates not to insist on FIRs, allowing refunds based solely on NCRP acknowledgement numbers.
The cyber crime wing has also launched major operations such as ‘Thiraineeku’ and ‘Hydra,’ which have led to hundreds of arrests and the detention of offenders.
