Tiruchi Reports ₹14.5 Crore Loss to Cybercrime in Eight Months

Cybercrime complaints in Tiruchi have seen a steep rise, with victims losing over ₹14.5 crore in the past eight months. According to data from the Tiruchi City Cyber Crime Police, only ₹2.29 crore of the defrauded money has been recovered so far.

The specialised police station, which has been operational since 2021, receives 10 to 15 complaints every day, most of which relate to online financial fraud. In 2024, 44 cases were registered, while 12 have been booked this year to date, of which 10 involve financial scams.

Police sources said cybercriminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods to deceive people, steal sensitive data, and gain unauthorised access to accounts. Recent complaints have included fake identity fraud, deceptive websites, phishing, digital arrest threats, and scams involving online shopping, jobs, and investments. Officers recently made an arrest in connection with a digital arrest case.

Officials highlighted that unlike traditional crimes such as robbery or theft, cybercrime is harder to investigate because perpetrators often operate from unknown locations, using fake IDs and untraceable phone numbers. Many scams have also been reported in the name of government schemes and scholarships, while fraudulent advertisements offering heavy discounts have tricked victims into online shopping fraud.

A senior officer said delays in filing complaints make it more difficult to recover stolen money. “The lack of awareness, ignorance, fear and greed have all been causes for the steady rise in cyber crimes,” the officer added. The police continue to advise citizens not to share personal information such as Aadhaar or PAN details with unknown callers and to avoid downloading links from unauthorised sources.

Awareness campaigns are being conducted to encourage the public to use strong passwords, update them regularly, and register complaints immediately through the toll-free helpline 1930.
