In a major step to strengthen its European infrastructure, TikTok has announced plans to build its second €1 billion data centre in Finland, reinforcing its focus on data security and local data storage.
The new facility will be set up in Lahti with an initial capacity of 50 megawatts, scalable up to 128 megawatts. This investment is part of TikTok’s broader €12 billion initiative aimed at enhancing data sovereignty for over 200 million users across Europe.
The move aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to localise European user data, amid rising regulatory scrutiny in both the U.S. and Europe around data protection and algorithm transparency.
Finland has become a preferred hub for data centres due to its cold climate, availability of low-cost and low-carbon energy, and a stable regulatory environment. These factors have attracted several global technology firms seeking efficient and sustainable operations.
However, the expansion has raised concerns among Finnish policymakers, particularly around transparency and potential security risks. Similar concerns had emerged earlier during developments related to TikTok’s first data centre in the country.
Despite this, local authorities in Lahti have welcomed the investment, highlighting its economic value for the region.
TikTok currently stores European user data across facilities in Norway, Ireland, and the U.S. Its first Finnish data centre in Kouvola is expected to become operational by the end of 2026, while the Lahti facility is projected for completion by 2027.
The development reflects TikTok’s continued efforts to strengthen its data infrastructure while addressing global concerns around privacy, security, and compliance.
