Three residents of Kovai lost around Rs 51 lakh to online fraudsters

Three city residents lost almost Rs 51 lakh to internet scammers. City cybercrime police have filed proceedings under the IT Act in response to complaints.

According to the police, on January 29, G Venkataraman, 65, of VH Road, got a WhatsApp message regarding making money from home. When Venkataraman contacted the sender, they told him that if he made an investment, he would earn from it by 1500% in just four months.

Resident invested Rs 28,49,000 in 15 payments to six bank accounts they gave over the past two months because he believed this. Instead of offering profits, the scammers coerced Venkataraman into making further investments. He complained to the cybercrime police after realizing he had been duped.

In the second instance, on March 10, S Rajalakshmi (32) of Vellakinaru got a message on Telegram regarding part-time employment openings. A lady named Madhavi informed Rajalakshmi that they would be collaborating with a developer to enhance travel rates for SR Tikka Travels when she phoned the number provided.

In order to start working, Madhavi also requested that she pay a fee and complete a form at a URL. She gave Madhavi Rs 14,14,451 in several installments to her several bank accounts since she believed her. According to the authorities, Rajalakshmi realized she had been duped after being unable to contact Madhavi. In response, she filed a complaint.

In the last instance, in January, M Vimalnathan, 38, of Gopalapuram, the city, received a WhatsApp message proposing a part-time position. When he inquired, an unnamed individual told him that he could work a part-time job and that they would provide instruction on buying and selling gold on Telegram.

Following their directions, Vimalnathan paid Rs 9,25,750 to their bank accounts in several installments after being requested to pay money to join. According to the police, he filed a complaint after realizing he had been duped.
