Three arrested for duping man of ₹25 lakh under digital arrest

Police stated on Monday that three guys had been nabbed for defrauding an elderly man out of ₹25 lakh by placing him under “digital arrest.”

An officer said that the three defendants, Rahul Verma, Shantanu Richoriya, and Arjun Singh, were taken into custody from a Paharganj hotel.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Surendra Choudhary said, “The complainant alleged he got a video call on March 21 from a man who posed as a Crime Branch officer of the Nashik police. The accused claimed that the complainant’s Aadhar card details had been used to open fraudulent bank accounts and were linked to money laundering by a major airline company.”

According to the DCP, the accused forced the complainant to transfer all of his funds and sell his wife’s jewelry in order to pay the sum through an internet site, threatening to take police action if he didn’t comply.

Following an inquiry, three cell phones, four SIM cards, and several checkbooks were found to be part of the network that the three accused work for, along with seven to eight mule accounts. The DCP further stated that efforts are underway to find and apprehend more syndicate members.
