Two years after its launch as a rival to Twitter, now known as X, Meta’s Threads has surpassed 400 million monthly active users, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced on Tuesday.
“As of a few weeks ago there are more than 400 million people active on Threads every month,” Mosseri said. “It’s been quite the ride over the last two years. This started as a zany idea to compete with Twitter, and has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives. I’m grateful to all of you for making this place what it is today. There’s so much work to do from our side, more to come.”
The milestone marks an addition of 50 million monthly users in the past quarter, following Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s April announcement that Threads had reached over 350 million monthly active users.
In comparison, X has more than 600 million monthly active users, based on past statements from its former CEO Linda Yaccarino.
Recent data from market intelligence provider Similarweb shows that Threads is narrowing the gap with X in daily mobile app usage. In June 2025, Threads’ iOS and Android apps recorded 115.1 million daily active users, representing a 127.8 percent increase from the previous year. X had 132 million daily active users, showing a 15.2 percent year-over-year decline.
However, X still leads in worldwide daily web visits. In June, X saw an average of 145.8 million daily web visits globally, while Threads recorded 6.9 million.
Threads’ rapid growth follows the rollout of several new features over the past year, including direct messaging, fediverse integrations, custom feeds, AI-powered enhancements, and more.
