THOOTHUKUDI: The Thoothukudi cyber crime unit has apprehended a couple from Kerala for defrauding a man of Rs 33.7 lakh after establishing a friendship with him on Facebook.
Sources indicate that the suspects, G Balamurugan and his wife Kiruba (25), connected with the victim, who shares the same name and works as an autorickshaw driver in Thoothukudi, through the social media platform.
After several months of interaction, Kiruba asked the victim for financial assistance to secure a job abroad. The victim, Balamurugan, transferred Rs 33.7 lakh over multiple occasions and even liquidated his assets to provide her with the funds. When he later requested the return of his money, the couple became unresponsive.
Realizing he had been scammed, Balamurugan lodged a complaint with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Following an investigation, the cyber crime police arrested the couple in Idukki, Kerala. G Balamurugan was remanded to Perurani district jail, while Kiruba was taken to Madurai Central jail. The investigation also uncovered that G Balamurugan had previously been arrested by Thanjavur police for a similar cheating offense.
