Thomas DeChiaro Steps In as Dartmouth’s Interim CIO

Wishing Mr. Thomas DeChiaro greater responsibilities and exciting challenges in this impressive new chapter!

A new chapter begins at Dartmouth as Thomas DeChiaro takes over as Interim Chief Information Officer starting May 19, 2025, with his tenure extending through 2026. Formerly the Vice President and CIO at Drexel University and Drexel College of Medicine, DeChiaro joins the Dartmouth community during a time of technological flux, where innovation is both challenge and opportunity.

Provost David Kotz expressed confidence in the new leadership, stating, “Tom DeChiaro is a champion of innovation with deep experience as an information and technology leader in higher education and industry and with a background in cybersecurity.” His appointment follows the retirement of Mitch Davis, who led the ITC division for nearly eight years.

DeChiaro’s mission is clear: align Dartmouth’s research, academic and operational goals with the swiftly evolving digital landscape. With a strong foundation in cybersecurity, AI and academic IT strategy, he steps in at a pivotal moment. “We’re on the cusp of a technology revolution, and what drew me to Dartmouth is that it’s an institution that is looking to be transformative in this space,” he said.

Highlighting the tension between security and openness in academia, he notes, “There’s an ever-increasing risk of cyberattack… at the same time, universities exist to advance the open dissemination of information.” Balancing these priorities will be central to his leadership.

His leadership style? Grounded in trust, open dialogue and empowerment. “Good communication develops trust,” DeChiaro shares. “I believe in building trust and empowering people. And I believe in embracing change.”

With a career that began at IBM and spans decades of leadership in both the public and private sectors, DeChiaro has built a reputation for transforming technological systems and guiding institutions through major digital transitions. He also brings a passion for education, having taught graduate-level courses and mentored future innovators.

Beyond his professional life, he finds joy in winemaking and supporting women-led startups through his advisory work with a venture capital fund.

As Dartmouth charts its future, DeChiaro is set to lead ITC into a bold, tech-forward era.
