Thermo Fisher Scientific has expanded its Research and Development Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru with an investment of one hundred and sixty crore rupees. The new facility shows the company’s long term commitment to India’s life sciences sector and supports Karnataka’s vision for Global Capability Centres and biotechnology growth.
The expanded centre is thirty seven thousand square feet in size. It was inaugurated by Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission. The facility is expected to create more than one hundred new jobs.
The centre now includes advanced automation and analytical platforms. It will support work in immunoassays, protein analysis and cell based studies. The aim is to drive new innovations in antibody design, development and manufacturing. This will strengthen Thermo Fisher’s global scientific network.
Over the past eighteen years, the Bengaluru R&D centre has developed more than two thousand recombinant antibodies. It has tested more than twenty five thousand antibodies under its validation programme. It has also produced more than two thousand primary and secondary antibodies for researchers across the world. These achievements have helped research in infectious diseases, antiviral therapies and cancer biology. Bengaluru has become an important part of Thermo Fisher’s global innovation ecosystem.
Priyank Kharge, Karnataka’s Minister for Electronics, Information Technology and Biotechnology and Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, spoke at the inauguration. He said, “Karnataka has long positioned itself as a vibrant hub for biotechnology and life sciences. The expansion of Thermo Fisher’s facility is a testament to the state’s continued emphasis on this objective.” He also noted that programmes such as the Karnataka Biotechnology Mission are helping growth through cooperation between government, industry and academic institutions.
Gianluca Pettiti, Executive Vice President and Sector President for Life Sciences, Diagnostics and Applied Sector at Thermo Fisher, said, “Bengaluru is a strategic hub for Thermo Fisher, and this expansion reflects our long term commitment to India’s innovation ecosystem.”
Manoj Prasad, Vice President for Information Technology and Digital Solutions in the APAC and MEA regions, said, “With this new infrastructure and potential talent infusion, we can accelerate scientific discovery and strengthen our global R&D network.”
Karnataka continues to lead India’s biotech and pharmaceutical sector. It contributes ten percent of India’s pharmaceutical revenues and sixty percent of biotechnology revenues. It is home to two hundred and twenty one formulation units, seventy four bulk drug units and thirty five CROs. The state’s bioeconomy is valued at thirty one billion United States dollars and is growing at an annual rate of ten point seven percent.
The expansion supports Karnataka’s Global Capability Centre plans by bringing discovery, design and manufacturing into one location. Thermo Fisher has more than one thousand four hundred professionals in Bengaluru working across research, software and product teams. The company shows how research driven centres can help position India as a leader in scientific innovation.
