Thane Navi Mumbai Bhayandar to get India’s first pod taxi network

A major transport initiative has been approved for the Mumbai metropolitan region with plans to introduce India’s first pod taxi system connecting Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mira Bhayandar. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The upcoming service aims to reduce traffic congestion across these rapidly growing municipal areas. It will operate on a public private partnership model, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority serving as the main implementing agency. A consultant has already been appointed to survey the three cities and prepare feasibility reports.

Officials said the project will feature an automated pod taxi network running on elevated routes across key arterial roads. Initial surveys are complete, and private companies are now being invited to submit detailed technical and financial proposals.

Authorities emphasised that municipal corporations will not face any direct financial burden, a move expected to simplify approvals and speed up execution. The plan reflects the government’s push to bring advanced mobility solutions to the region in line with ongoing metro and road infrastructure upgrades.

Residents and daily commuters have largely welcomed the announcement. Many people who travel frequently between Thane, Navi Mumbai and Mira Bhayandar see the pod taxi proposal as a promising alternative to long and congested journeys. Some remain cautious about timelines, costs and how well the new system will integrate with existing transport options, but the project has created strong expectations for smoother and faster travel in the future.
