Tesla has announced that its electric vehicles will offer one of the lowest running costs in India. The company says owners will hardly need to visit service centres for the first four years because most updates and maintenance tasks are handled through over the air technology and remote diagnostics.
The company shared these updates while outlining its plans to expand both retail presence and the supercharger network in India. Sharad Agarwal, who heads Tesla’s India business, said the company is confident about long term growth in the country after starting operations in July this year with the imported Model Y.
Tesla has now opened its first all in one Tesla Experience Centre in Gurugram. This centre is the first in India to offer sales, after sales support, deliveries, and supercharging under one roof. This follows the launch of the company’s two sales centres in Mumbai and Delhi.
Agarwal said Tesla is preparing to expand its charging network with a new supercharging centre in Gurugram along with two more sites planned in Mumbai. Retail expansion is also being planned. While the company did not name the cities, it is expected to look at locations in south and west India. Tesla will follow a phased expansion strategy and will continue with its self owned retail centres instead of using third party dealers.
A key part of Tesla’s pitch to Indian buyers is its low operating cost. This advantage comes not only from lower electricity expenses but also from minimal service needs. Tesla does not provide traditional service schedule plans. Instead, owners are told that their cars do not need to come in for service “for years” unless there is a technical issue or physical damage.
Tesla cars rely on technology to stay updated. Over the air updates, similar to those used by smartphone companies, keep the vehicle software current and ensure better performance. Remote diagnostics also allow the company to identify and solve many issues without asking customers to visit a service centre.
