Cybercrime is most prevalent in southern India, with Telangana and Karnataka topping the list of states with the highest rates of such offences. Puducherry also ranks prominently among Union Territories, according to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Tuesday.
As per NCRB’s mid-year 2022 data, Telangana recorded the highest cybercrime rate at 40.3 per cent — nearly ten times the national average of 4.8 per cent. The cybercrime rate is calculated by dividing the number of fraud cases reported during a year by the population of a state or Union Territory in lakhs.
Maharashtra reported a cybercrime rate of 6.6, with 8,249 financial crimes registered in 2022 for a population of 1,257 lakh. Karnataka also featured among the states with the highest rates, underscoring a worrying trend in the southern region.
To strengthen investigation capabilities, the Central government has set up a state-of-the-art National Cyber Forensic Laboratory (Investigation). In addition, it has developed the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) platform called the ‘CyTrain’ portal, aimed at enhancing skills and training in tackling cybercrime.
