A change in timeline has emerged for a new artificial intelligence model being developed by Meta. The company has reportedly delayed the release of its AI model code-named “Avocado,” shifting the launch from this month to at least May, according to a report citing people familiar with the matter.
The delay comes at a time when Meta is significantly expanding its artificial intelligence ambitions. The company is investing heavily in AI development and has outlined plans to build its own chips as part of its long-term strategy.
Earlier in January, Meta announced capital spending plans ranging between $115 billion and $135 billion for the year. The investment is part of the company’s broader goal of pursuing “superintelligence,” a stage where artificial intelligence could surpass human capabilities.
According to the report, the upcoming AI model has been under development for several months. However, its performance has reportedly fallen short when compared with the latest models introduced by competing companies.
A Meta spokesperson responded to the development by saying, “Our next model will be good, but more importantly, show the rapid trajectory we’re on, and then we’ll steadily push the frontier over the course of the year as we continue to release new models.”
The spokesperson further added in an emailed statement, “We’re excited for people to see what we’ve been cooking very soon.”
The report also stated that leaders within Meta’s AI division have discussed the possibility of temporarily licensing Gemini from Google to support the company’s AI products. However, no final decision has been made regarding this option.
Earlier reports in December had indicated that Meta was developing the text-based AI model “Avocado,” which was initially expected to launch in the first quarter.
