TDK Corporation, a leading global electronics company, has announced a significant strategic move with the acquisition of SoftEye, Inc., a U.S.-based systems solution company specializing in smart glasses technology. As a result of this transaction, SoftEye is now an indirectly wholly-owned subsidiary of TDK Corporation.
Based in San Diego, California, SoftEye has been at the forefront of developing custom chips, cameras, software, and algorithms specifically designed for use in next-generation smart glasses. The company’s core vision revolves around seamlessly connecting users with generative artificial intelligence (AI).
SoftEye’s innovative technology, which it refers to as “the eyes for AI (eyeGenI™, eyeGI™)”, leverages its proprietary custom chips, cameras, and algorithms to create an end-to-end system. This system is designed to empower smart glasses with advanced visual capabilities that can integrate directly with AI functionalities, opening up new possibilities for user interaction and data processing in augmented and virtual realities.
“SoftEye brings expertise in algorithms, camera, and low-power chip design which gives TDK leadership positions in driving consumer applications for AR related technologies,” stated Jim Tran, Corporate Officer, TDK Corporation.
“We are building technologies for AI glasses connecting the user with generative AI, which fits directly in line with TDK strategy for smart glasses which can connect people with AI for a more intuitive and compelling user experience,” continued Te-Won Lee, CEO, SoftEye. “SoftEye’s novel, low power eye intent system unlocks a new type of Human Machine Interface that allows the user to communicate with AI simply through their eye movements. Together, we believe we can deliver even more advanced integrated solutions spanning systems, software and machine learning and custom chips.”
This acquisition underscores TDK’s commitment to expanding its capabilities in advanced sensing and connectivity solutions, particularly in the rapidly evolving fields of AI and wearable technology. The integration of SoftEye’s specialized expertise is expected to significantly enhance TDK’s portfolio and accelerate the development of groundbreaking products in the smart glasses market.
