TBC Plans Tesla Tunnel Loop in Nashville

The Boring Company (TBC), founded by Elon Musk, is set to build a 10 mile underground tunnel system in Nashville. The new loop will connect the city’s downtown area and convention center to the airport. The announcement was made by the company and the Tennessee Governor.

This project will be privately funded by TBC and unnamed private partners. Local officials and the company will now begin a public review process to determine possible routes, get input from the community, and finalize the details of the initial 10 mile phase.

Construction will only begin once all necessary approvals are received. If all goes as planned, the first part of the tunnel system could become operational as early as fall 2026.

If completed, Nashville would become the second city after Las Vegas to have an operational loop by TBC . In Las Vegas, the company has built tunnels around the convention center and claims to have completed 3 million rides using Teslas.

TBC was launched in 2017 after Elon Musk shared his frustration with traffic in a post online. Originally, Musk’s idea involved a network of underground tunnels where vehicles would move on sleds. He even mentioned plans to connect New York and Washington using hyperloop technology, but those ideas were never realized.

Attempts to build tunnels in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago were also dropped due to public opposition. Many other cities have seen little progress after early interest.

The hyperloop idea, once a major part of Musk’s vision, has also been shelved. Even in Las Vegas, the Teslas used in the tunnels are driven by humans, despite earlier promises of full self driving.

Now, TBC mainly operates as a people mover in limited areas like convention centers. However, the tunnel system could offer benefits over traditional transit systems, such as causing less disruption to daily traffic. The Nashville loop is also not expected to use taxpayer money.

The Governor’s office highlighted TBC ’s safety performance, stating that the Las Vegas loop recently received a 99.57 percent safety and security rating from federal agencies. However, no mention was made of the construction issues faced by the company in other cities.
