The Uttar Pradesh government has partnered with Tata Technologies Limited (TTL) to modernise 121 government polytechnic institutes across the state. The initiative, titled Tata Technology Excellence Centres, aims to align the curriculum with current industry needs and reduce the gap between academic training and industry expectations.
According to a government order issued by Narendra Bhooshan, Additional Chief Secretary for Technical Education, the move was driven by the need to update outdated subjects and ensure that diploma students receive relevant, job-ready training. “In polytechnics, some topics have become irrelevant or are not in accordance with industry requirements. These centres will upgrade them and bridge the industry-academia gap,” said Bhooshan.
The total investment for the initiative stands at Rs 6935.8 crore. TTL will contribute 87 percent of the amount, or Rs 6034.2 crore, while the remaining 13 percent, amounting to Rs 1063.9 crore, will be provided by the state government. Additionally, an extra Rs 858 crore will be allocated by the state for civil infrastructure and basic amenities, with Rs 709.2 lakh to be spent per institution.
The first phase of the project will see upgrades at 45 polytechnic institutions. The broader objective is to deliver high-quality technical education to diploma students, improving their chances of employment and helping them develop essential soft skills and personality traits needed by industries.
Tata Technologies Limited will also involve international companies and institutions to support the upgradation process. The company will draft the entire project plan, including short, medium and long-term strategies. It will also conduct a baseline study to assess the condition of the institutions before the upgrades begin.
To support implementation, TTL will provide two trainers at each selected institute for the first two years, and one trainer in the third year. It will also supply training materials, digital training platforms, and bring in industry experts as needed. Regular dialogue programmes will be conducted across all 121 institutions to ensure ongoing alignment with industry standards.
