Surat Scrap Dealer Falls Victim to ₹2.19 Crore Multi-State and Overseas Fraud

A scrap dealer from Vesu, Sujit Gupta, has fallen victim to ₹2.19 crore large-scale fraud allegedly orchestrated by three individuals who promised high-quality domestic and international scrap metal at unusually low rates. The scheme, involving transactions in India and Mauritius, has prompted the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) to launch a detailed investigation.

The alleged conspiracy started in 2022 when Neelamni Srivastava and Arun Agrawal approached Mr. Gupta, presenting themselves as partners in a reputed firm with offices in Thane, a warehouse in Bhiwandi, and an overseas branch in Mauritius. To gain his trust, they invited victim to visit their Indian facilities and assured a steady supply of superior scrap at prices well below market rates. They promised that Indian shipments would arrive within a week and international consignments within a month.

Between September 2022 and March 2023, Victim made several payments based on these assurances. For Indian scrap, he transferred ₹2.01 crore but received goods worth only ₹1.64 crore. Subsequently, for international shipments, he paid ₹71.18 lakh but received just ₹26 lakh in return. The accused further claimed to operate a firm named Radiant Overseas in Mauritius, taking ₹4.84 crore for an international deal but delivering goods worth only ₹3.46 crore.

As deliveries stalled, Victim realized he was being defrauded. He even spent six months in Mauritius trying to secure the products. A visit to the accused’s Mumbai office further confirmed the scam, as Mr. Agrawal and partner Sandeep Shirodkar denied any business dealings, redirecting him to Mr. Srivastava, making it clear that the international scrap venture was a ruse.

With a total loss of ₹2.19 crore, Victim filed a formal complaint. The Detection of Crime Branch has registered a case against the three accused and is now tracking financial transfers and the movements of the individuals involved. The suspects allegedly exploited promises of high returns and the complexities of international trade to execute the large-scale fraud.
