In a notable development, Super Micro Computer has launched an independent probe following a criminal case involving individuals connected to the company, including its co-founder.
The action follows charges filed by U.S. prosecutors against 3 individuals, including co-founder Yih-Shyan Liaw, over an alleged scheme to smuggle AI-related technology to China in violation of export control laws.
Super Micro clarified that it has not been named as a defendant in the case and is fully cooperating with authorities. It also stated that the individuals involved are no longer associated with the company.
To maintain transparency, the investigation is being overseen by independent board members, including the Lead Independent Director and the Chair of the Audit Committee. External legal counsel and forensic experts have also been engaged to support the process.
The case involves allegations of a complex operation where U.S.-made AI servers, potentially equipped with advanced chips, were routed through multiple countries before reaching China. Authorities claim the scheme involved masking the final destination and bypassing export regulations.
In parallel, the company has initiated an internal review of its global trade compliance program. It said this step is aimed at reinforcing safeguards around advanced technologies and ensuring strict adherence to regulatory standards.
Super Micro has not provided a timeline for the completion of the investigation and will share updates once the process concludes.
The case has attracted wider attention due to its scale, involving billions of dollars in AI technology and raising concerns around global supply chains and export compliance.
