STL launches India’s first hollow core fibre cable to power AI-ready data centres

In a major step for next-generation connectivity, Sterlite Technologies has introduced a breakthrough optical solution designed to meet the growing demands of AI-driven infrastructure.

Sterlite Technologies (STL) has launched India’s first Hollow Core Fibre (HCF) cable, as announced through a regulatory filing under Regulation 30. The innovation is aimed at enabling faster and more efficient data transmission for modern data centres and hyperscale networks.

Revolutionary hollow core technology

The newly launched cable marks a significant shift from traditional fibre design. Instead of transmitting light through solid glass, the Hollow Core Fibre uses an air-filled core. This allows signals to travel approximately 46% faster while reducing latency and signal loss.

Key specifications:

  • Signal speed improvement: ~46% faster
  • Core design: Air-filled hollow core
  • Primary application: Data centres and hyperscalers
  • Market position: India’s first HCF technology

Hybrid cable architecture for advanced networks

To address evolving network requirements, STL has developed a hybrid cable architecture. This combines multiple fibre technologies, including Hollow Core Fibre for ultra-low latency and high-power delivery, G.654.E fibre for ultra-low loss in long-haul transmission, and G.657.A1 NOVA for flexibility and broader network coverage.

This integrated design supports high-performance environments such as data centres, hyperscalers, and high-frequency networks.

Strong R&D foundation

STL is the first company in India to develop and manufacture HCF technology. Its innovation ecosystem is backed by more than 780 patents and a focus on “Glass-to-Terabit” connectivity solutions.

Dr Badri Gomatam, CTO at STL, said, “Our R&D focus has always been on solving the most complex challenges of the future. With the launch of Hollow Core Fibre cable, we are providing the ‘speed-of-light’ infrastructure required for the AI revolution. This is a defining moment that demonstrates our capability to innovate and empower hyperscalers and data centres on a global scale.”

Market impact and global reach

The launch strengthens STL’s position in the AI data centre market and highlights its role in advancing optical communication technologies. With manufacturing presence across North America, Europe, and Asia, the company serves customers in over 100 countries, including data centre operators, cloud providers, telecom companies, ISPs, and large enterprises.
