Starlink Set to Launch in India as SpaceX Nears Approval

India is close to a major step forward in digital connectivity as SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service nears full regulatory approval. Most of the licensing and regulatory requirements have been completed, and the final clearances are expected within days, according to Dr Pawan Goenka, Chairman of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe).

Dr Goenka recently met with Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, during her visit to India. Their discussion focused on clearing remaining authorization hurdles. While most of the groundwork is done, Dr Goenka noted that “Even after authorisation, it will take a few months for the service to become operational.”

Starlink is among three major players, along with OneWeb and SES, aiming to launch satellite-based broadband services in India. These services are expected to provide high-speed internet to remote and underserved areas such as rural villages and mountainous regions where traditional broadband has limited reach.

Dr Goenka shared optimism about the role of satellite connectivity in advancing internet access across the country. He highlighted that combined efforts from multiple providers will play a key role in bridging India’s digital divide.

The arrival of Starlink aligns with India’s growing focus on digital inclusion. Satellite internet is seen as a powerful tool to improve connectivity where it is needed most. IN-SPACe continues to support the involvement of private players in India’s expanding space sector, making it easier for global companies like SpaceX to enter the market.

As India experiences rapid growth in its space ecosystem and builds stronger international partnerships, the near-entry of Starlink signals the nation’s increasing importance in the global space and tech economy.

While the service launch is still a few months away, the recent regulatory progress is a significant milestone. With approvals almost complete, the dream of delivering satellite-powered internet to the most remote parts of India is now closer to becoming a reality.
