The satellite based internet service Starlink is moving closer to its entry into the Indian market. The company has partnered with the Maharashtra government to set up gateway earth stations that will support its connectivity network. This development has increased public curiosity about the possible plans, pricing, and internet speeds that the service might offer once it becomes available in the country.
Starlink has already secured most of the required approvals in India and only a few clearances remain. The company has also begun hiring local employees as it prepares to establish offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Based on ongoing developments and widespread speculation, the launch of the service in India is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2026.
There is still no official announcement about the pricing, but early reports suggest that the one time setup cost could be around Rs 30000. Monthly plans are rumoured to begin at approximately Rs 3000. These figures have not been confirmed by the company and should be viewed as preliminary information.
Starlink has received permission from the government to operate in India, but the approval includes a maximum limit on total users. The company will be allowed to provide up to 2000000 connections across the country.
As for internet speed, it is expected that the service will offer bandwidth ranging from 25 Mbps to 225 Mbps. These speeds are aimed at improving connectivity in remote and underserved regions where traditional networks are unreliable or unavailable. While the lower end speeds may seem modest for major cities, Starlink could be a significant upgrade in rural areas with limited access to the internet. It is also expected that different plans will be offered at different speed levels, with the 25 Mbps plan likely to be the most affordable.
With preparations underway and most approvals in place, Starlink’s entry could bring a new phase in satellite based broadband across India, particularly for regions that struggle with stable connectivity.
