Starlink establishes office space in Mumbai as part of India expansion

Satellite internet company Starlink has leased office space in the Chandivali area of Mumbai. This shows the company is working to set up its operations in India, where it plans to launch commercial services soon.

Property documents from Propstack show that Starlink Satellite Communications has rented an office on the ground floor of a commercial building named Boomerang in Chandivali. The lease is for five years starting from 14 October. The space measures 1294 square feet. The monthly rent is more than rupees three point five two lakh. The rent will increase by five per cent every year. The company has also paid a security deposit of rupees thirty one point seven lakh as stated in the report.

This is Starlink’s first reported office in Mumbai. It supports the company’s plan to build a local presence as it prepares to enter the Indian market.

Industry experts quoted in the news report said that Mumbai could become a central hub for the company’s operations in India.

A news report last week said that Starlink is planning to set up nine gateway earth stations across India. One of these stations will be in Mumbai. These stations are needed to deliver satellite based internet services across the country.

Starlink has received temporary approval from the government to use certain radio frequencies for testing. The company must also follow security rules. It is allowed to import one hundred satellite terminals to run trials. These terminals cannot be used for commercial services yet.

Satellite communication involves national security concerns. For this reason the government has placed strict conditions on the testing phase. Only Indian nationals can operate the company’s ground stations until foreign workers receive security clearance from authorities. All data collected during testing must stay inside India. The company also has to submit full details of all testing equipment to government officials.

Starlink is now the third company to receive permission for such security trials. OneWeb and Jio Satellite have received similar permissions. No company can begin full operations until final approval is granted by India’s security agencies.

Starlink is part of SpaceX which is led by Elon Musk. The service provides fast broadband using a network of low earth orbit satellites. The company wants to supply internet to remote and underserved areas in India where there is still a lack of traditional broadband services.

India has more than eight hundred and fifty million internet users. The growth of smartphones, low cost data and new mobile networks has helped improve digital access across the country.
