Starlink will debut its internet service as the government releases new regulations for satellite equipment

India’s users are apparently anticipating the arrival of satellite internet services. Businesses like OneWeb and Starlink have finished their preparations and are currently awaiting the government’s finalization of the spectrum allotment regulations. The government’s recent measures indicate that this deployment is imminent. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has set new standards for the testing and certification of satellite equipment, including gateways and user terminals, to be carried out within India, according to a media report.

Companies that offer satellite communication services in the nation are required to utilize or import only approved equipment as of the end of August. This is the first time that such certification has been made mandatory.

The Department of Technology (DoT) released conformance assessment standards and measures on February 25 for 14 different types of telecommunications equipment, including integrated gateways and user terminals, as well as non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite equipment. 180 days following the notice date, the mandate is scheduled to go into force.

No person or organization is allowed to import, sell, distribute, or use the designated telecommunication equipment after the mandate goes into effect at the end of August unless it complies with the Telecommunication Engineering Center’s required testing and certification procedures.

Initiated in 2019, this required testing and certification program for telecom equipment is to guarantee that telecom equipment conforms with applicable national and international rules and does not adversely affect the functioning of current networks.

The program has been implemented in stages, and the most recent announcement describes the goods that are part of phase 5, which includes satellite communications equipment.

With a budget of USD 2 billion set out for the required equipment, the government is also looking at the idea of allowing foreign vendors to participate in the auction process for BSNL’s 5G network equipment. 5G network upgrades are expected to happen quickly.
