Zoho’s Sridhar Vembu Says Arattai Messaging App Built on 20 Years of Homegrown Technology

Zoho co-founder and Chief Scientist Sridhar Vembu has said that the company’s messaging app, Arattai, may appear simple, but it is built on two decades of in-house technology and research.

In a post, Vembu stated, “Arattai is on the surface a simple product but it has a lot of depth inside.” He explained that the app runs on Zoho’s own messaging and audio-video framework, which has been developing for about 15 years. This system ensures quick connections and clear calls across Zoho’s platforms.

Vembu also highlighted another key technology, a distributed framework that manages large-scale operations by balancing workloads across servers and databases. This framework handles fault tolerance, security, and performance tracking. According to him, these systems form the backbone not only of Arattai but of Zoho’s entire ecosystem of products.

The Zoho co-founder emphasized the company’s strong focus on research and development. He mentioned that he has now dedicated himself full-time to R&D, promising that users can expect more innovations from Zoho in the coming years. “Our staying power comes from the depth of all the R&D we do,” he said.

Vembu also shared a message for the Arattai team, praising their patience and dedication over years of work without expecting immediate results. He compared the role of a committed engineer to that of a Rishi, someone who stays focused and unaffected by external distractions. “Allow neither praise nor criticism nor fame to distract you, resolutely stay the course,” he told the team.

Arattai, which means “chat” in Tamil, was introduced as Zoho’s Made-in-India answer to popular global messaging apps. While it has not yet reached mainstream popularity, Vembu’s post indicates that the company is focused on long-term growth and building strong independent technology rather than chasing quick success.
