Sridhar Vembu praises MapmyIndia’s Mappls app as a symbol of Indian innovation

Zoho co-founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu has praised MapmyIndia’s navigation app, Mappls, describing it as “very nice” and stating that it represents “decades of R&D, much longer than Google Maps.” He also extended his best wishes to Rohan Verma and the MapmyIndia team, recognising their contribution to India’s growing ecosystem of homegrown technology.

Vembu’s appreciation came soon after Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw demonstrated the app on 11 October. During the demonstration, Vaishnaw highlighted Mappls’ advanced 3D navigation features and its ability to provide detailed shop-level mapping.

Encouraging citizens to try the “Swadeshi ‘Mappls’” app, Vaishnaw showcased several key features, including 3D views of over-bridges and underpasses, precise shop and venue locations within multi-level buildings, Junction View, door-level navigation, live traffic signal timers, safety and speed alerts, and toll cost estimates.

The government also announced plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with MapmyIndia to integrate Mappls’ GIS technology into the railway sector, indicating broader use of Indian mapping solutions in public infrastructure.

With more than 35 million downloads, Mappls continues to champion the spirit of “Swadeshi technology,” built entirely on MapmyIndia’s indigenous mapping solutions. Its success aligns with the government’s larger initiative to promote Indian-made digital products.

Leaders such as Ashwini Vaishnaw and Home Minister Amit Shah have already adopted Indian platforms, including Zoho Mail and Zoho’s productivity suite, in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of advancing domestic innovation and self-reliant technology.
