Spotify has revealed a new feature that allows listeners to shape their playlists with detailed instructions and personal preferences. The feature, called Prompted Playlist, is rolling out in beta across select global markets and is designed to give users a more active role in how the platform creates personalised playlists.
The feature lets listeners describe the type of music they want, and Spotify uses their listening history to build a playlist that matches their taste. It works through artificial intelligence and analyses past habits from day one. Users can also edit their prompt to refine the results or start fresh with a completely new one.
Spotify shared an example of how the feature works. A listener can request “music from my top artists from the last five years,” and the platform will generate a playlist that fits the request. They can then add further instructions such as “and feature deep cuts I have not heard yet” or “include music from this year’s biggest films and most talked about TV shows that match my taste.” The feature also includes preset prompts and English language algorithms, which appear as personalised playlists on the Home page.
According to the company, Prompted Playlist builds on the AI playlist tool introduced in 2024. The difference now is that listeners can use longer prompts with precise instructions, and the system uses world knowledge to make smarter recommendations.
Spotify said the playlist will refresh regularly based on updated listening patterns and new information. Users can also choose to refresh it daily or weekly for a more dynamic experience. Each song will come with a brief explanation that shows why it was recommended.
The feature is currently in beta and available only in New Zealand in English. Spotify said it will continue improving Prompted Playlist before expanding it to more regions.
