Spotify has announced new partnerships with major record labels including Sony, Universal, Warner, and Merlin to develop AI tools designed to protect artists’ rights, ensure fair compensation, and uphold creative integrity. The collaboration, revealed on October 16, 2025, focuses on building “responsible AI” systems that prioritise musicians and songwriters.
The company stated that these AI tools will be developed in close cooperation with record labels, distributors, and music publishers, ensuring that artists have the choice to opt in and that their work is fairly credited and compensated. While Spotify has not yet disclosed full details about these tools, the platform already uses AI features such as its AI DJ and playlist creation powered by user prompts.
The initiative is guided by four key principles: strong partnerships across the music industry, artist choice in AI participation, fair and transparent compensation, and improved artist-fan engagement. Spotify emphasised that its goal is to use AI to enhance human creativity, not replace it.
Recently, Spotify strengthened its AI policy to combat misuse, targeting users who upload large volumes of AI-generated tracks, duplicate songs, or manipulate the platform’s algorithms. This move came after an AI-generated band gained viral attention, raising concerns over authenticity and copyright in digital music.
To promote transparency, Spotify will implement the DDEX music labelling system to clearly mark when AI has been involved in the creation of music. Reaffirming its stance, the company stated, “Some in the tech industry believe copyright should be abolished. We don’t. Musicians’ rights matter. Copyright is essential.” Spotify also warned that without proper oversight, AI could undermine rights, consent, and compensation in the music industry.
In the future, Spotify plans to introduce technologies that will help artists identify when their work is used in AI-generated content and ensure they are compensated accordingly. The company also aims to expand this framework to include distributors and other rights holders.
Additionally, Spotify has launched a generative AI research lab and product team to develop technologies that align with its responsible AI principles. Work on the initial tools has already begun, with more updates expected soon.
