Spotify has announced the launch of a new in-app messaging feature that lets users share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks while chatting with friends, without leaving the platform. The feature is now available for both free and premium users and aims to make content sharing more interactive and engaging.
According to the company, this update comes in response to repeated requests from listeners for a dedicated space to share playlists and tracks directly inside Spotify. At present, the feature is available only on mobile devices, limited to users aged 16 and above, and is being rolled out in select regions.
At its initial stage, messaging is restricted to one-on-one chats. Listeners can share tracks, podcasts, or audiobooks straight from the “Now Playing” screen by tapping the share button, selecting a friend, and sending instantly. Users will also be able to reply with text or emojis. Spotify will recommend contacts to message based on shared playlists, existing interactions, or Family and Duo plan memberships.
How It Works
While playing any track, podcast, or audiobook, open the “Now Playing” view. Tap the share icon, choose a friend from the suggested list, and hit send. All messages can then be accessed through a new Messages tab, which appears by tapping on the user’s profile picture. Once a request is accepted, the conversation continues with emojis, text, and further Spotify content.
For creators, this feature could help widen discovery, as fans can now promote music, audiobooks, and podcasts organically through conversations on the platform itself. Spotify emphasised that the function is meant to complement existing sharing options such as SMS or social media, not replace them.
Privacy And Safety
The company underlined that privacy controls are built in. Message requests can be declined, and users can block contacts or disable the option completely in Settings. All messages are encrypted and will be moderated in line with Spotify’s Terms of Use and Platform Rules. Reported material will be reviewed, while automated systems will work to detect harmful or illegal content.
With this addition, Spotify is positioning itself as more than just a streaming app, transforming into a social space where music, podcasts, and audiobooks spark real-time conversations.
