South Western Railway has successfully upgraded 835 kilometres of its network during the financial year 2024 to 2025 as part of a major speed enhancement programme. This has resulted in a total time saving of over 60 minutes, benefiting both passenger and freight train operations across the Bengaluru, Hubballi and Mysuru divisions.
Officials confirmed that the initiative focused on increasing speeds along loop lines and raising the maximum permissible sectional speed on key routes. These changes are helping improve overall operational efficiency, reduce congestion and support faster movement of trains.
A senior railway official said, “Not only are passenger journeys becoming faster and more punctual, but goods trains too are moving more swiftly across the zone, contributing to improved logistics and economic growth.”
The Bengaluru Division led the way with 591 kilometres of track upgrades, saving 41 minutes in travel time. Loop line speeds were raised to 30 kilometres per hour at 15 stations, covering 19 loops. Hubballi Division upgraded 10 stations and 12 loops, helping clear bottlenecks and reduce delays. These upgrades saved 45 minutes of delays across the zone.
In the current financial year 2025 to 2026, an additional 135 kilometres of track have already been upgraded, mostly in the Mysuru Division, resulting in 17 minutes of further time savings. Speed improvements included increasing line speeds from 110 kilometres per hour to 130 kilometres per hour over 281 kilometres and from 100 kilometres per hour to 110 kilometres per hour over 495 kilometres.
The Hubballi Division has also upgraded five loop lines at four stations this year, adding to the overall gains in travel efficiency. According to the official, “Increasing the loop line speeds has helped clear bottlenecks in station yards and ensured quicker crossover of trains from main lines. This plays a vital role in reducing sectional delays and improving punctuality.”
South Western Railway operates nearly 400 coaching trains daily across 3,692 route kilometres and 384 stations. The upgrades have already improved punctuality, reduced congestion and enhanced freight competitiveness in key industrial zones.
