South Korea has accused Chinese AI startup DeepSeek of sharing user data with the owner of TikTok

The Chinese AI firm DeepSeek and ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, have been linked by South Korea’s data protection authorities. Authorities and the public in South Korea are extremely alarmed by this disclosure, which has prompted prompt regulatory action.

According to a Yonhap News Agency investigation, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) verified that ByteDance has been receiving user data from DeepSeek, a company renowned for its sophisticated chatbot technology. DeepSeek’s utilization of ByteDance’s cloud service, Volcano Engine, which enabled the data flow, allowed for the identification of this link. The DeepSeek app’s data harvesting tactics have prompted the PIPC to temporarily halt new downloads in South Korea.

Additionally, the regulator has sent DeepSeek a formal request to get information on how it manages data and how much data it shares with ByteDance. DeepSeek has stated its willingness to work with the PIPC to resolve any concerns it has identified with its adherence to South Korean data protection regulations. To improve its data protection procedures, the corporation has designated a representative in South Korea.

Given the continuous international worries over TikTok’s data security and privacy, this episode has increased scrutiny of Chinese internet companies’ data practices. The measures taken by South Korea are part of a larger trend of heightened regulatory scrutiny and alertness of international tech firms doing business there.
