A growing push to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem has led Sophrosyne Technologies to expand its research and development operations in Udupi. The move reinforces coastal Karnataka’s rising profile as the “Silicon Beach of India” and follows recent funding and government support for the startup.
Founded in Bengaluru, Sophrosyne is working on ultra low power biosensing system on chip solutions designed for wearable devices. Its technology is capable of tracking multiple vital signals including ECG, PPG, respiration, and temperature with high precision while keeping energy use low. These capabilities are aimed at powering next generation health wearables.
The expansion comes soon after the company closed a $2 million seed funding round led by Bluehill.VC, with participation from deep tech investors focused on semiconductor and engineering IP ventures. The funding will be used to move silicon designs from prototype to full development, grow engineering and firmware teams, and begin early customer deployments across global markets.
Alongside private funding, Sophrosyne also received a $1.2 million Design Linked Incentive grant from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The grant was awarded after the company cleared detailed technical evaluations, providing further validation of its technology and aligning with India’s national semiconductor goals.
With the expanded R&D centre in Udupi, Sophrosyne said around 60% of its workforce will now be based in the region. This shift is expected to create new opportunities in chip design, firmware engineering, and product innovation. The company is actively hiring across several roles as it builds its engineering teams.
The latest expansion reflects wider momentum in India’s semiconductor and deep tech sectors. Government incentives and increasing investor interest are encouraging local innovation and IP creation. Industry observers see such developments as steps toward reducing import dependence while placing Indian startups within global chip value chains.
Founded in 2022, Sophrosyne Technologies is a fabless semiconductor startup focused on multi vital biosensing SoCs for wearable and digital health devices. Its solutions aim to deliver deeper health insights at significantly lower power consumption, addressing key challenges in medical grade wearable technology.
