Sony unveils its first 200MP phone camera sensor to take on Samsung

Sony has introduced its first 200MP camera sensor for smartphones, marking a major step into a segment long dominated by Samsung. The new sensor is expected to appear first in upcoming flagship phones from Chinese brands, with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra likely to debut it.

Sony Semiconductor has launched the LYTIA LYT 901, a 1/1.12 inch sensor with 200MP resolution and 0.7 micron pixels. This makes it slightly larger than Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1, which has a 1/1.22 inch size and 0.64 micron pixels. The bigger pixel size could help Sony’s sensor capture images with lower noise, especially in low light environments.

The LYT 901 supports all pixel autofocus, similar to dual pixel phase detection autofocus. It also offers 4x in sensor zoom that produces results closer to optical quality. With 16 in 1 pixel binning, the sensor can generate 12.5MP images with stronger low light performance.

Since it is a 2025 era product, Sony has added AI powered remosaicing to enhance image detail. The company claims this technology improves clarity by processing data from the high resolution sensor more intelligently.

Sony has also included Dual Conversion Gain HDR and Hybrid Frame HDR technologies to boost dynamic range. The sensor captures multiple frames and merges them to deliver images with more than 100dB high dynamic range. This approach is similar to Samsung’s Smart ISO Pro and Staggered HDR systems.

The LYT 901 has already entered mass production and is being shipped to smartphone makers. Apart from the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the OPPO Find X9 Ultra and Vivo X300 Ultra are also expected to be among the first devices to use Sony’s new sensor early next year.

The launch heats up competition in the high resolution camera segment. Samsung may need to introduce a larger 200MP ISOCELL sensor for its next generation flagship phones to match Sony’s push for bigger sensors that capture more light and reduce noise.
