Sony develops technology to trace original music in AI-generated songs

Amid growing debate over copyright and artificial intelligence, Sony Group is taking steps to address concerns around the use of protected music in AI-created tracks.

Sony Group has reportedly developed a new technology that can identify original music embedded within AI-generated songs. The system is designed to help rights holders detect whether their copyrighted work has been used without permission in AI-created music and to bring more transparency to how such content is produced.

According to a report by a business publication, the technology can trace back the original songs that influenced an AI-generated track. Since music-generating AI models rely on large volumes of existing songs and samples for training, Sony’s tool aims to reveal which works form the foundation of the final output.

The system is said to be capable of identifying multiple original tracks within a single AI-generated song. It can also estimate the percentage of each original work used to create the new composition. However, the report did not disclose technical details or explain how the system functions internally.

The technology reportedly operates in 2 ways. If AI developers cooperate, Sony’s system can directly connect to their base models and analyse training data to identify copyrighted works used during development. If developers do not cooperate, the system instead compares AI-generated music with existing music catalogues to estimate potential source material.

Sony AI, the research and development arm of Sony Group, led the project. A related academic paper outlining the approach has reportedly been accepted at an international conference, indicating the work has undergone peer review.

Sony reportedly plans for the technology to be integrated into AI music models by developers or used by content owners during licensing discussions. While no commercial rollout timeline has been shared, the company is said to view the system as a way to support fairer revenue sharing by ensuring original songwriters are properly recognised when AI-generated music draws on their work.
