Sony PlayStation 6 May Launch by 2028 with Major Upgrades at PS5 Price Point

Leaks suggest that Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 6 could deliver a major performance boost while maintaining the same price point as the current PlayStation 5. The next-generation console is reportedly scheduled to launch between late 2027 and early 2028.

The information comes from a YouTube channel that claims to have accessed internal AMD documents from 2023, providing insight into the potential hardware powering the PS6. Although Sony has not officially confirmed any details, the leak hints at significant improvements in both performance and efficiency.

According to the leaked specifications, the PlayStation 6 might be equipped with eight Zen 6 CPU cores, 40 to 48 or more RDNA 5 compute units running at speeds above 3GHz, and GDDR7 memory supported by a 160 bit or 192 bit bus. The system is expected to run on a total board power of around 160 watts, which points to a strong focus on power efficiency.

One of the most notable claims is that the PS6 could deliver up to three times the rasterisation performance of the PlayStation 5. Despite this performance leap, Sony is reportedly aiming to keep the launch price close to the PS5’s original price of 499 dollars in the United States.

The console is also rumoured to adopt a chiplet based design and may incorporate AMD’s Navi 5 chips. Backwards compatibility with both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games is expected, helping users maintain access to their existing game libraries.

In addition, the PS6 could integrate AI based features designed to provide smoother and more responsive gameplay. This approach mirrors Sony’s earlier strategy with the PlayStation 4, which focused on affordable performance rather than high end specifications.

By aiming for strong performance per dollar and optimising energy use, Sony may be looking to avoid the higher pricing often seen with mid generation upgrades like the upcoming PS5 Pro.

As with all leaks, these details are subject to change, and Sony has yet to make any official announcement regarding the PlayStation 6.
