Sony Explores Sale of Cellular Chipsets Business Amidst Entertainment Focus Shift

Sony Group is reportedly exploring the sale of its unit, Sony Semiconductor Israel, which specializes in providing cellular chipsets for connected devices. This potential divestment signals Sony’s strategic shift to further concentrate its business efforts on the burgeoning entertainment segment.

The Japanese conglomerate is currently working with investment bankers to facilitate the sale, though the process is said to be in its early stages. Sony Semiconductor Israel generates approximately $80 million in annual recurring revenue and is anticipated to fetch a valuation close to $300 million in the market. Sony originally acquired this business in 2016 for $212 million.

This move aligns with Sony’s broader corporate strategy, which has seen the company increasingly prioritize its entertainment divisions. Last year, more than 60% of Sony’s total profit was derived from its diverse entertainment portfolio, encompassing games, movies, and music.

The potential sale underscores a clear direction for Sony, as it seeks to streamline its operations and allocate resources towards areas of core strength and higher growth potential within the entertainment industry.
