As concerns grow around copyright and transparency in AI-created content, Sony Group is reportedly working on a solution aimed at protecting original creators. The company has developed a new technology designed to trace source music embedded within songs generated by artificial intelligence systems.
According to a report by an international publication, the new system can identify original music that may have influenced or been used in AI-generated tracks. The move comes amid ongoing lawsuits against AI music startups and rising industry concerns about how training data is sourced and used in generative AI models.
Since music generation tools rely on large datasets for training, AI systems are typically built using existing songs and audio samples. Sony’s technology is said to analyse AI-created music and detect the original compositions that contributed to the final output. The tool can reportedly recognise multiple source tracks within a single AI song and estimate what percentage of each original work was used. However, no technical details about how the system functions have been publicly shared.
The technology is designed to operate in 2 different ways. When AI developers cooperate, the system can directly connect with their base models and examine training datasets to determine which copyrighted works were used. If developers do not cooperate, the system instead compares AI-generated songs against existing music catalogues to estimate possible sources.
Development of the technology was led by Sony AI, the research and development division of Sony Group. A related academic paper explaining the approach has reportedly been accepted at an international conference, indicating that the research has undergone peer review.
Sony is said to be exploring multiple use cases for the technology. It could be integrated directly into AI models by developers or used by content owners during licensing discussions. While the company has not shared a commercial launch timeline, the goal is reportedly to help build fairer revenue-sharing systems and ensure original songwriters receive recognition and compensation when their work contributes to AI-generated music.
