SoftBank and OpenAI-backed initiative Stargate is set to deploy its first small-scale data center in Japan by the end of 2025, marking a significant step in their ambition to reshape AI infrastructure through localized, energy-efficient compute power.
The Stargate project, supported by OpenAI and backed by SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, aims to build a network of next-generation data centers across Japan, optimized for artificial general intelligence (AGI) workloads. The smaller facility, expected to be operational by December, will serve as a pilot site for testing technologies related to heat management, low-latency computing, and AI model optimization.
“This marks the beginning of a new chapter in AI infrastructure, where compute is decentralized and adapted to regional needs,” said a spokesperson for SoftBank. “The pilot will help us validate both the hardware and sustainability models before scaling to full-size hyperscale facilities.”
The Stargate project is envisioned as a cornerstone of Japan’s digital transformation, aligning with national goals of technological independence and carbon neutrality. It also aims to address the global bottleneck in AI compute resources by providing scalable, localized solutions.
OpenAI’s involvement highlights the Stargate project’s broader ambitions in AGI. The pilot data center will be key in understanding how localized data infrastructure can support the training and deployment of large-scale AI models while reducing latency and energy consumption.
As the demand for AI compute surges globally, Stargate’s approach could become a template for regional AI data infrastructure, blending performance with sustainability.
