Masayoshi Son, the founder of SoftBank Group Corp, is looking to collaborate with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. on a trillion-dollar industrial complex in Arizona to develop robotics and artificial intelligence, according to individuals familiar with the situation.
According to the media, SoftBank representatives have met with U.S. federal and state government representatives to speak about potential tax benefits for businesses constructing factories or making other investments in the industrial park. They have also had discussions with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
The $1 trillion investment is quadruple that of the $500 billion “Stargate” initiative, which is being sponsored by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle and aims to expand data center capacity throughout the United States.
Media said on Friday that although SoftBank is eager to include TSMC in the initiative, it is unclear if the Taiwanese giant would be interested.
SoftBank chose not to respond. A request for comment from TSMC was not immediately answered. Requests for response were not immediately answered by the U.S. Department of Commerce or the White House.
