SkyeChip Launches Malaysia’s First Locally Designed Edge AI Processor

Malaysia has marked a major step in its technology journey with the launch of its first homegrown edge AI processor. Local chip design firm SkyeChip unveiled the MARS1000 processor at an industry event earlier this week, making Malaysia one of the few countries developing AI chips domestically.

Although edge processors are not as powerful as advanced products from global leaders such as Nvidia, the development signals Malaysia’s growing ambition to strengthen its role in the global AI industry. Edge processors are designed to bring computing closer to devices and users, enabling faster and more efficient performance for AI-driven applications.

Malaysia already plays a significant role in global semiconductor manufacturing and has been accelerating its push into AI. In late 2024, the government established the Malaysian National AI Office, which will focus on seven key areas. These include speeding up AI adoption, setting regulatory frameworks, and ensuring ethical standards in AI development.

The country’s growing activity in AI has also attracted international attention. In July, reports suggested that the United States administration was considering restrictions on the sale of American-made AI chips to Malaysia and Thailand, over concerns that these chips could be smuggled into China. While such restrictions have not yet been put in place, Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry has introduced new trade requirements. As of July 14, individuals and companies must obtain a trade permit and notify the government at least 30 days in advance before exporting or transshipping U.S.-made AI chips.

The launch of the MARS1000 represents a technological milestone for Malaysia as it looks to establish itself not just as a hub for manufacturing but also as a centre for AI innovation.
