Skild AI Unveils ‘Skild Brain,’ a General-Purpose AI Model for Multi-Purpose Robots

Skild AI, a robotics startup backed by tech giants like Amazon.com and SoftBank Group, has unveiled Skild Brain, a groundbreaking foundational artificial intelligence model designed to bring human-like intelligence to a wide array of robots. This innovative model aims to enable robots, from assembly-line machines to humanoids, to think, navigate, and respond with greater autonomy and adaptability.

The launch of Skild Brain is a significant step in the burgeoning field of multi-purpose robotics, moving beyond the single-function machines typically found in factories today. Skild-powered robots have already demonstrated impressive capabilities in various complex tasks, including climbing stairs, maintaining balance when subjected to external force, and efficiently picking up objects in cluttered environments—all tasks that demand advanced spatial reasoning and adaptability.

To ensure safety, the company has incorporated built-in power limits, preventing robots from applying unsafe force. Skild’s unique training methodology involves using both simulated episodes and human-action videos, which are then refined with real-world data collected from every robot running the system. This continuous feedback loop creates a “shared brain” effect, constantly enhancing the model’s capabilities and addressing the inherent scarcity of robotics data.

Co-founders Deepak Pathak and Abhinav Gupta emphasized that this data-driven approach is crucial for developing robust and versatile robotic intelligence. Skild’s client roster already includes LG CNS and other partners in logistics and industrial applications, showcasing the practical applicability of their technology.

The two-year-old startup, which has attracted top talent from companies like Tesla, Nvidia, and Meta, successfully raised $300 million in a Series A funding round last year, valuing the company at $1.5 billion. Its notable investors include Menlo Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos. Skild Brain is poised to accelerate the development and deployment of more intelligent and versatile robots across various industries.
